Agriculture Development Project
Within the 36 acre Coconut plantation which is situated in the Kurunegala District of the North Western Province of Sri Lanka Ygro focuses on 3 major segments. These segments are titled Special projects because special emphasis is given to develop them in a scientific way such that others could learn from these models. By learning and implementing such crops the village communities could earn value towards livelihood whilst contributing to the country’s export earnings.
Cinnamon, Pepper and Paddy
The 3 segments are: Cultivation of Cinnamon, Cultivation of Pepper and Paddy.
Cinnamon
At the facility a 1/2 acre is used to cultivate cinnamon. These cinnamon plants take 3 years to begin to provide an income. Once they have begun producing they could last up to 30 years.
Pepper
Pepper is a widely used spice in Sri Lanka and around the world. A 1/2 acre has been cultivated with Pepper. Pepper is grown mostly as woody shrubs, small trees. it is a climbing shrub that grows to about 30 ft (9 m) tall through a system of aerial roots, but is usually pruned to 12 ft (3.66 m) in cultivation. Its flowers are slender, dense spikes with about 50 blossoms each. The berry-like fruits it produces become peppercorns; each one is about 0.2 in (5 mm) in diameter and contains a single seed.
Paddy
Paddy at Ygro was initiated as a model in a 3 acre paddy land. Ygro is growing this as a model in order to ensure that by following good practices paddy could be done both as a means of livelihood to the farmer whilst contributing to the grain needs of the country. Special Projects4The use of chemical pesticides have increased the number of villagers having chronic Kidney disease. The model therefore tries to eliminate the use of such pesticide and instead use alternative methods. There are two cultivation seasons namely; Maha and Yala which are synonymous with two monsoons. Maha Season falls during “North-east monsoon” from September to March. Yala season is effective during the period from May to end of August.
Future
Ygro is working with the Export Development Board of the government in order to establish the crops as models so that villagers will replicate and earn a livelihood as well as contribute to the export of the country.
